Mid January had a thaw and immediately the weather turned very cold. Today is a warm 1 degree and steadily rising. The past week had night time lows of MINUS 23F !! Yikes! But the best is that the lake is nicely frozen and the snowmobiles are dashing up and down the lake.
We hope everyone who has time, comes to visit Long Lake at least once in the winter....there is beauty all around! Check out www.mylonglake.com for winter activities.

Long Lake has an abundance of ice this year, some 16 inches thick and Tom Whitney (hope you don't mind us sharing this photo) is harvesting ice for his ice house....a pass time of folks who, without electricity, filled their ice houses in the winter. This is a great tradition and brings back memories of years gone past. As of October 28, there was some dusting of snow on the upper peaks around the lake. Fireplaces and wood stoves are starting to offer the curls of smoke rising over the town. The air is clear and crisp and a lovely time to escape to the mountains.
SUMMER is finally here! Let's hope it stays well into September. The fourth of July brought out the best of Long Lake with a beautiful display.....again .......of fireworks over the lake. The weather has brought us sunny days, cool evenings, and those pesky thunderstorms that seem to roll through middle of the night. There are many activities this year in the Adirondacks with art shows, antique shows, music and the annual Long Lake Regatta with fun for the whole family on July 15. Check on-line www.longlakeassociation.weebly.com and www.mylonglake.com
As spring comes in like a lion to Long Lake, it brought with it heavy rain and high waters the town hasn't ever remembered seeing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPqlU4w27OIweeblylink_new_window is a depiction of the conditions ....along with music that was posted on April 28, 2011. For all of you who visit in summer, kayaking in the parking lot of the Adirondack Hotel was only enjoyed by perhaps a few, and perhaps only once in a lifetime!
Timber Hill is above water and will be open June 1, 2011. We will be doing a little remodeling in May to get ready for the summer season. Happy Spring to all. After many years of having only a blog site, Timber Hill on Long Lake now has its own first real 'Website'. We are very excited and hope it provides a nicer interpretation and easier format for our guests to find us, contact us, and view our offerings and information! We invite you to "comment" and let us know, through this page, your thoughts.... and share your experiences at Timber Hill. We encourage you to share your favorite hiking locations, fishing spots...perhaps, restaurants you've tried, and other activities you've found enjoyable in the Long Lake and Adirondack region.
Looking forward to a great Spring and Summer season! Amy and Paul Van Laak....your hosts! |
